Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Pharmacology
  • Vascular Medicine

Background:

  • Triptans are selective serotonin 5-HT(1B/1D) receptor agonists widely used for acute migraine and cluster headache treatment.
  • While generally safe, triptan therapy has been linked to rare cardiovascular events like myocardial infarction and stroke.

Observation:

  • This report details a patient experiencing spontaneous splenic infarction.
  • The splenic infarction occurred following the administration of sumatriptan for migraine relief.

Findings:

  • The case suggests a potential association between sumatriptan use and splenic infarction.
  • This represents a rare but serious adverse event not previously well-documented for sumatriptan.

Implications:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Clinicians should be aware of splenic infarction as a potential complication of sumatriptan therapy.
  • Further investigation may be warranted to understand the mechanism and incidence of triptan-induced splenic events.
