Summary

Intracranial lipomas are rare brain tumors. In a study of epilepsy patients, only one case definitively linked a lipoma to focal epilepsy, suggesting they are often incidental findings.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between intracranial lipomas and epilepsy.
  • To determine the incidence of intracranial lipomas in epilepsy monitoring unit patients.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of brain MRIs from epilepsy monitoring unit admissions over six years.
  • Identification of patients with intracranial lipomas.

Main Results:

  • Five patients (0.14%) with intracranial lipomas were identified.
  • Lipomas were primarily midline, tectal, or parietal.
  • Epilepsy was attributed to other pathologies in two patients; in one patient, a midline lipoma was suspected as the cause of seizures.

Conclusions:

  • Intracranial lipomas are typically incidental and asymptomatic, often found near the midline.
  • The direct causal link between intracranial lipomas and epilepsy is infrequent, as demonstrated in this study.
