Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Public Health
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Glaucoma is a leading cause of visual impairment and a priority eye disease in Oman's VISION 2020 Plan.
  • A situation analysis in 2002 reviewed available data on glaucoma prevalence and management in Oman.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review available data on glaucoma in Oman based on a 2002 situation analysis.
  • To understand the epidemiology and management of glaucoma within the Omani population.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of general demography and eye disease morbidity data from Omani institutions.
  • Calculation of glaucoma incidence and treatment coverage using predefined parameters.

Main Results:

  • Ophthalmologists reported glaucoma at a rate of 1.14/1000.
  • Glaucoma accounted for 11.5% of estimated blindness in Oman in 1997.
  • Primary open-angle glaucoma was 63.5% of cases, with only 25% receiving surgery despite accessible treatment.

Conclusions:

  • Glaucoma requires a programmatic approach in Oman to mitigate visual disability.
  • Interventions should focus on reducing/delaying visual impairment and enhancing patients' quality of life.
