Background:

Extracting detailed patient information from narrative clinical text is challenging for research.
Automated systems are needed to streamline data acquisition for clinical studies.

Purpose of the Study:

To develop and evaluate a prototype information extraction system for narrative echocardiogram reports.
To facilitate the identification of potential research candidates by enriching clinical databases.

Utilized a Unified Medical Language System (UMLS)-compatible architecture.
Employed canonical language patterns to identify sentence templates for concept-value extraction.
Evaluated system performance on ten clinical concepts against manual extraction.
