Background:

Postabortion family planning is a key component of comprehensive abortion care.
Early initiation of contraception following abortion is essential.
Evidence on optimal contraceptive use postabortion is continuously evolving.

Purpose of the Study:

To review existing evidence on contraception following abortion.
To develop evidence-based guidelines for contraceptive use after medical abortion.

Main Methods:

Systematic review of published literature.
Analysis of current clinical guidelines on postabortion contraception.

Main Results:

Contraception should be started early after a first-trimester abortion.
Concurrent contraception with surgical abortion is practical and effective.
Most methods are safe after medical abortion, with some usable immediately and others after the next cycle.

Conclusions:

Nearly all contraceptive methods can be safely and effectively used after medical abortion with appropriate precautions.
Guidelines support early and diverse contraceptive options postabortion.
