Background:

Existing tools for assessing subjective outcomes in CAM are often burdensome or do not capture the full spectrum of patient experiences.
A unified, patient-centered measure for common CAM outcomes is needed.

Purpose of the Study:

To develop a pilot instrument for measuring subjective outcomes in Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM).
To create a valuable tool that addresses the limitations of current CAM outcome assessment methods.

Main Methods:

A three-phase instrument development study was conducted.
Phase I involved patients and practitioners identifying relevant standardized and novel outcome items.
Phases II and III refined item relevance and content validity through Q-sort and expert review.

Initially, 30 standardized and 8 new items were identified as relevant.
A Q-sort refined these to 29 "moderately relevant" items.
Expert review resulted in a 35-item pilot instrument classified into content domains.

This instrument offers a more efficient and comprehensive approach to assessing subjective CAM experiences.
