Background:

Virtual reality (VR) simulators are increasingly used for surgical training.
Assessing the learning effect of VR simulators requires understanding factors influencing skill acquisition.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the influence of clinical background on learning effects observed in a VR laparoscopy simulator (LapSim).

Main Methods:

12 final-year medical students and 12 inexperienced residents performed baseline and post-training tasks on a LapSim.
Training involved progressively difficult modules, with endpoint measurement on a challenging 'cutting' task.
Task completion time, tissue trauma, and precision were quantitatively scored.

Main Results:

Both groups showed similar baseline performance.

Post-training, residents demonstrated significantly faster completion of the 'cutting' task.

Residents also exhibited significant improvements in trauma and precision parameters.

Conclusions:

A clinical background enhances the acquisition and improvement of laparoscopic skills on VR simulators.
Individuals without surgical experience may not be ideal for evaluating the efficacy of VR surgical training programs.
