Background:

  • Virtual reality (VR) simulators are increasingly used for surgical training.
  • Assessing the learning effect of VR simulators requires understanding factors influencing skill acquisition.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the influence of clinical background on learning effects observed in a VR laparoscopy simulator (LapSim).

Main Methods:

  • 12 final-year medical students and 12 inexperienced residents performed baseline and post-training tasks on a LapSim.
  • Training involved progressively difficult modules, with endpoint measurement on a challenging 'cutting' task.
  • Task completion time, tissue trauma, and precision were quantitatively scored.

  • Both groups showed similar baseline performance.
