Summary

Cigarette smoking may reduce postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) risk, but this study found no link between recent smoking exposure, measured by exhaled carbon monoxide (CO), and PONV. These findings suggest smoking

Area of Science:

  • Anesthesiology
  • Pharmacology
  • Pulmonology

Background:

  • Cigarette smokers exhibit a reduced risk of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV).
  • The underlying mechanisms for this protective effect remain unclear.
  • It is hypothesized that acute exposure to smoke constituents may be responsible for mitigating PONV.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the correlation between recent cigarette smoke exposure and postoperative nausea.
  • To test the hypothesis that higher preoperative exhaled carbon monoxide (CO) levels in smokers are associated with reduced PONV.
  • To determine if the protective effect of smoking against PONV is directly related to acute smoke exposure.

Main Methods:

  • An observational study involving 140 female smokers.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Preoperative measurement of exhaled carbon monoxide (CO) levels.
  • Assessment of PONV over the first 24 hours post-surgery using nausea scores.
  • Main Results:

    • No significant correlation was found between preoperative CO levels and nausea scores at recovery room discharge.
    • No correlation was observed between preoperative CO levels and nausea experienced over the first 24 hours postoperatively.
    • Significant correlations with postoperative nausea included a history of PONV, motion sickness, intraoperative antiemetic prophylaxis, anesthesia duration, and postoperative opioid use.

    Conclusions:

    • The protective effect of smoking against PONV does not appear to be directly related to preoperative exhaled CO levels.
    • The findings suggest that the reduction in PONV among smokers is not solely dependent on acute exposure to cigarette smoke constituents.
    • Further research is needed to elucidate the complex mechanisms behind smoking's influence on PONV.
