Area of Science:

  • Electrochemistry
  • Analytical Chemistry
  • Materials Science

Background:

  • Development of selective ion-selective electrodes (ISEs) is crucial for accurate metal ion determination.
  • Cobalt(II) detection is important in environmental monitoring and industrial processes.
  • Poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) based membranes offer a versatile platform for ISE fabrication.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To fabricate and characterize a new PVC-based membrane sensor for cobalt(II) ions.
  • To evaluate the sensor's performance, including response range, selectivity, and stability.
  • To demonstrate the sensor's applicability in real sample analysis and potentiometric titrations.

Main Methods:

  • Fabrication of a PVC-based membrane using a cobalt(II) complex of 2,4-dimethyl-1,5,8,11-tetraazacyclotrideca-1,4-diene [Me2(13)dieneN4] as an ion carrier.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Composition of the membrane: Co2+ complex/PVC/NaTPB/DBP (15:50:15:20 w/w).
  • Electrochemical characterization including potentiometric measurements, selectivity studies, and response time evaluation.
  • Main Results:

    • The sensor demonstrated a Nernstian response for Co2+ over a wide concentration range (7.94x10(-6)-1.0x10(-1) M) at pH 2.5-7.0.
    • Achieved a rapid response time of 10 seconds and stability for up to 3 months.
    • Exhibited excellent selectivity for Co2+ over other metal ions and tolerance to 25% non-aqueous content.

    Conclusions:

    • The developed PVC-based membrane sensor is highly effective for selective and sensitive detection of cobalt(II) ions.
    • The sensor's performance makes it suitable for direct determination of Co2+ in real samples.
    • The sensor can be successfully employed as an indicator electrode in potentiometric titrations, such as with EDTA.
