Summary

Dermatitis artefacta, a skin condition, predominantly affects young women with lesions on visible areas. While severe self-mutilation occurred in some patients, attempted suicide was not observed in this study.

  • Dermatitis artefacta (DA) is a factitious dermatosis with poorly understood outcomes.

  • Follow-up in 17 patients identified severe complications, including psychosis and self-mutilation, years after diagnosis.
