Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between hot flashes and chronic insomnia in midlife women.
  • To determine the prevalence of hot flashes and chronic insomnia across menopausal stages.
  • To identify factors associated with chronic insomnia in this population.

Main Methods:

  • Telephone interviews with a random sample of 3243 Californians, including 982 women aged 35-65.
  • Classification of women into premenopause, perimenopause, and postmenopause groups.

    Conclusions:

    • Severe hot flashes demonstrate a strong association with chronic insomnia in midlife women.
    • Systematic screening for hot flashes is recommended for women presenting with insomnia.
    • Effective treatment of hot flashes may enhance sleep quality and mitigate adverse outcomes of chronic insomnia.
