Summary

Celiac disease (CD) can cause multifocal axonal polyneuropathy. While most patients saw little improvement, one experienced complete recovery after immunomodulatory therapy, suggesting a link between CD and neuropathy.

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Gastroenterology
  • Immunology

Background:

  • Celiac disease (CD) is an autoimmune disorder triggered by gluten ingestion.
  • Neuropathy is a common complication of various systemic diseases.

Observation:

  • This study observed six patients presenting with multifocal axonal polyneuropathy.
  • These patients were subsequently diagnosed with celiac disease.

Findings:

  • Five out of six patients showed limited or no improvement with standard treatments like dietary changes or immune therapies.
  • One patient with severe weakness and mild electrodiagnostic findings achieved complete neuropathy resolution after immunomodulatory therapy.

Implications:

  • Celiac disease should be considered in the differential diagnosis of multifocal axonal polyneuropathy.
