Area of Science:

  • Rheumatology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Microbiology

Background:

  • Septic arthritis diagnosis is increasing.
  • Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is an emerging cause of septic arthritis.

Observation:

  • A retrospective review of 48 septic arthritis cases identified 5 (10.4%) caused by GBS.
  • GBS arthritis patients had a mean age of 51.6 years and a mean hospital stay of 13.2 days.
  • GBS arthritis frequently presented as oligoarticular (3/5) or polyarticular (1/5) rather than monoarticular (1/5).

Findings:

  • The mean number of joints involved in GBS arthritis was significantly higher (2.6) compared to other organisms (1.1) (P=0.005).
  • Age and hospital stay duration did not differ significantly between GBS and non-GBS septic arthritis groups.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Oligoarticular or polyarticular distribution and subtle symptoms of GBS arthritis can lead to diagnostic delays.
  • Implications:

    • Increased awareness of GBS arthritis characteristics is crucial for timely diagnosis.
    • Rheumatologists should consider GBS in the differential diagnosis of septic arthritis, especially with polyarticular involvement.
    • Further research into GBS pathogenesis and early diagnostic markers is warranted.
