Background:

  • Interpersonal functioning in eating disorders (ED) is well-researched.
  • However, the interplay of stressful life events, coping mechanisms, and social support across the ED spectrum remains underexplored.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the role of stressful life events, coping styles, and social support in differentiating individuals with varying degrees of eating disturbances.
  • To examine these factors across a spectrum of eating concerns, from diagnosed ED to no preoccupations.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 125 women was analyzed, categorized into four groups: diagnosed ED, ED remission, intense preoccupations, and no preoccupations.
  • Participants completed the Eating Disorder Evaluation and questionnaires on stressful life events, coping styles, social support, and marital satisfaction.

Main Results:

  • Significant differences emerged between groups regarding the impact of stressful events, levels of social support, and the use of task-oriented versus emotion-oriented coping.
  • No significant differences were observed in couple satisfaction across the groups.

Conclusions:

  • Cognitive appraisal of stress, adaptive coping strategies, and enhanced social networks are crucial for ED prevention and treatment.
  • For women in remission, leveraging social support effectively is a vital relapse prevention strategy.
