    Background:

    • Postreinforcement pauses are a key feature of behavior under fixed-interval schedules.
    • Previous research has yielded conflicting findings regarding the relationship between successive postreinforcement pauses.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the autocorrelation of postreinforcement pauses across different fixed-interval schedule lengths.
    • To determine if interval length or reinforcer magnitude influences the relationship between successive pauses.

    Main Methods:

    • Lag-1 autocorrelation analysis was applied to postreinforcement pause data.
    • Experiments were conducted using rats and pigeons under various fixed-interval schedules (15s to 480s).
    • Reinforcer magnitude was manipulated (constant and variable).

    Main Results:

    • A consistent, weak positive relationship was observed between pause values in successive intervals.
    • This positive relationship did not systematically change with interval length.
    • The tendency was present under both constant and variable reinforcer magnitude conditions.

    Conclusions:

    • The dynamic properties of performance under fixed-interval schedules do not appear to vary systematically with interval length.
