Summary

Female drivers outperform males on the Swedish theory driving-license test. This real gender difference in test performance may contribute to why young male drivers are over-represented in traffic accidents.

Area of Science:

  • Traffic Safety Research
  • Educational Psychology
  • Driver Licensing

Background:

  • Young male drivers (18-24 years) exhibit higher rates of motor-vehicle accidents in Sweden compared to females.
  • Existing research questions potential gender disparities in Swedish driving-license test performance.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate gender differences in Swedish driving-license test performance.
  • To determine if observed differences are statistically significant or due to differential item functioning (DIF) related to gender or education.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of two random samples of test-taker performance on the Swedish theory driving-license test.
  • Application of descriptive and inferential statistics to evaluate test results.

Main Results:

  • Female test-takers achieved higher scores than male test-takers on the theory test.
  • No items exhibited DIF concerning gender or educational background, indicating a genuine performance difference.
  • No significant gender difference was found in the practical driving test.
  • Educational background did not fully account for the observed gender gap in the theory test.

Conclusions:

  • The gender disparity in the theory test appears to be a real and potentially persistent phenomenon.
  • This consistent difference in theory test performance may be a contributing factor to the over-representation of male drivers in traffic accidents.
  • Targeted interventions to improve male test-takers' theory test results could positively impact their future driving careers and road safety.
