Summary

Severe methanol intoxication from inhalation requires prompt recognition and treatment. This case highlights that inhaled methanol poisoning is as dangerous as ingested methanol and necessitates urgent medical intervention, including haemodialysis and ethanol therapy.

Background:

  • A 38-year-old man presented with symptoms of severe methanol intoxication, including visual disturbances, photophobia, hyperventilation, and nausea.
  • The patient reported a 36-hour history of inhaling methanol in a poorly-ventilated laboratory.
  • Initial laboratory results revealed severe metabolic acidosis and a toxic serum-methanol level.

Findings:

  • The patient received treatment with acute haemodialysis and ethanol infusions.
