Summary

A rare case of cricoid cartilage ossification mimicked a foreign body in a 54-year-old man presenting with severe throat pain. Imaging revealed calcification, not an ingested object, leading to successful treatment.

Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Radiology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Severe throat pain and airway compromise can be caused by foreign bodies.
  • Subglottic narrowing on imaging necessitates differential diagnosis.

Observation:

  • A 54-year-old man presented with severe throat pain and signs of subglottic edema.
  • Fiber-optic endoscopy revealed a narrowed subglottic space.
  • Radiography showed a dense linear opacity at the cricoid cartilage level.

Findings:

  • Computed tomography (CT) scan excluded a foreign body, revealing a calcified ridge on the cricoid lamina.
  • The patient improved with antibiotics and steroids, and gastrointestinal endoscopy was negative for foreign bodies.
  • This case represents vertical ossification of the cricoid lamina mimicking a foreign body.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • Cricoid cartilage ossification is a rare condition that can present as a foreign body.
  • Accurate radiological assessment, including CT, is crucial for differentiating ossification from foreign bodies.
  • Understanding this rare entity aids in appropriate clinical management and avoids unnecessary interventions.
