Knot in a pulmonary thromboembolus.

J Mathew, M Powari

    International Journal of Cardiology
    |July 18, 2006
    PubMed
    Summary

A rare case of a knotted pulmonary thromboembolus was discovered postmortem. This unusual finding in deep vein thrombosis suggests formation within large veins or the heart.

    Area of Science:

    • Cardiovascular Pathology
    • Thrombosis Research
    • Forensic Medicine

    Background:

    • Pulmonary thromboembolism (PTE) is a significant cause of mortality.
    • Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is the primary source of PTE.
    • Risk factors include obesity, smoking, and recent hospitalization.

    Observation:

    • A postmortem examination revealed a pulmonary thromboembolus causing death.
    • The patient had a history of obesity, smoking, and recent chest infection.
    • An unusual knot was identified in the leading portion of the thromboembolus.

    Findings:

    • This is the first reported instance of a knot within a thromboembolus.
    • The knot's morphology suggests formation in a high-flow environment.
    • Potential formation sites include large systemic veins or the right heart chambers.

    Implications:

    • This finding offers novel insights into thromboembolus formation dynamics.
    • Understanding knot formation may refine diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for DVT and PTE.
    • Further research is warranted to elucidate the precise mechanisms and clinical significance.
