Hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection has significantly declined in the Basque Country, Spain. This epidemiological shift from high to low endemicity impacts vaccination strategies and public health approaches.

Area of Science:

  • Epidemiology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection historically presented a significant public health concern.
  • Understanding shifts in HAV epidemiology is crucial for effective disease control and prevention.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze the changing epidemiology of HAV infection in the Basque Country.
  • To assess the implications of these epidemiological changes for vaccination strategies.

Main Methods:

  • Cross-sectional study comparing anti-HAV seroprevalence data from 2004 with historical data from 1986-1987 and 1992.
  • Analysis of incidence rates and patient demographics over different time periods.

Main Results:

  • A significant decrease in HAV seroprevalence across all age groups was observed (P<0.001).

Related Experiment Videos

  • Incidence of HAV cases per 100,000 inhabitants dropped from 38.0 (1986-1988) to 2.9 (2002-2004).
  • The mean age of patients with hepatitis A increased over time, with 20% hospitalized between 1997 and 2004.
  • Conclusions:

    • The Basque Country has transitioned from a middle-high endemicity to a low endemicity pattern for HAV infection.
    • The observed epidemiological changes necessitate a re-evaluation of current vaccination strategies to ensure optimal public health outcomes.
