Compliance therapy did not significantly improve antipsychotic medication adherence in schizophrenia patients. Further randomized studies are needed to fully evaluate this intervention for schizophrenia and related disorders.

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Clinical Psychology
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Schizophrenia is a severe mental illness characterized by delusions and hallucinations.
  • Antipsychotic medications are effective but adherence is a significant challenge, with at least half of patients not complying with prescribed regimens.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the efficacy of compliance therapy in improving antipsychotic medication adherence among individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia.

Main Methods:

  • A systematic review of randomized controlled trials was conducted using the Cochrane Schizophrenia Group Trials Register.
  • One trial (n=56, 2-year duration) comparing compliance therapy with non-specific counseling was included.
  • Data were extracted, and relative risks (RR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated for dichotomous outcomes.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Compliance therapy showed no significant difference in non-compliance with treatment compared to non-specific counseling (RR 1.23, CI 0.74 to 2.05).
  • Attitudes towards treatment, mental state, insight, global functioning, and quality of life were not substantially affected by compliance therapy.
  • A non-significant reduction in average hospital days was observed for patients receiving compliance therapy.

Conclusions:

  • Current evidence does not clearly support the benefit of compliance therapy for schizophrenia and related disorders.
  • Further well-designed randomized studies are necessary to comprehensively evaluate the potential benefits of compliance therapy.
