Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Integrative Medicine
  • Clinical Trials

Background:

  • Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability globally.
  • Acupuncture has a long history of use for stroke in China and is gaining international recognition.
  • Subacute and chronic stroke patients often face long-term functional impairments.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of acupuncture for stroke patients in the subacute or chronic stages.
  • To synthesize evidence from randomized controlled trials comparing acupuncture with control groups.
  • To identify gaps in current research regarding acupuncture's role in stroke rehabilitation.

Main Methods:

  • Comprehensive literature search across multiple databases including Cochrane, MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Chinese databases.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Inclusion of truly randomized, unconfounded clinical trials comparing acupuncture with placebo, sham acupuncture, or no acupuncture.
  • Independent selection, quality assessment, and data extraction by two review authors.
  • Main Results:

    • Five trials with 368 patients met the inclusion criteria; all had inadequate methodological quality.
    • A pooled analysis suggested a potential benefit of acupuncture for global neurological deficit (OR 6.55, 95% CI 1.89 to 22.76), but with significant heterogeneity.
    • One trial found no significant improvement in motor function with acupuncture compared to sham acupuncture, with wide confidence intervals.

    Conclusions:

    • There is currently insufficient clear evidence to support the use of acupuncture for subacute or chronic stroke.
    • The observed potential benefits require confirmation through large, methodologically rigorous trials.
    • Further research is essential to establish the efficacy and safety profile of acupuncture in stroke management.
