Summary

Implanon rod migration is minimal, with most cases showing less than 2 cm movement within one year of correct insertion. Significant migration did not occur in this study of subdermal contraceptive implants.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the occurrence and degree of Implanon rod migration.
  • To assess migration in correctly positioned implants over 12 months.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective study of 100 women receiving Implanon insertion by a certified professional.
  • Measurements of rod position relative to the insertion site at 3 and 12 months post-insertion.

Main Results:

  • At 3 months, 39% of patients showed migration, mostly caudal and under 2 cm.
  • At 12 months, 55% showed migration, predominantly caudal and under 2 cm, with one case exceeding 2 cm.

Conclusions:

  • Significant migration of the Implanon rod does not occur within one year of correct insertion.
  • Observed migration is typically less than 2 cm and often directed towards the insertion site.
  • No instances of deep migration were reported.
