[The effects of removable partial dentures on abutment teeth in elder patients]

Purpose:
To analyse the effects of removable partial dentures on abutment teeth in elder patient and to discuss the reason of the effects and the preventive measures.
Methods:
95 aged patients with removable partial dentures were involved in the investigation, the rate of dental caries, fractures and missing in their abutment and non abutment teeth and the reason were recorded and analysed. X2 test was used for the statistical comparison.
Results:
The removable partial denture in 5 years after wearing, the dental caries rate of the abutment teeth (17.38%) was significantly higher than the non abutment teeth (7.10%) (P<0.01). The missing abutment teeth (27.01%) extracted because of fracture or loose that made by periodontal disease and dental caries which can not be reserved was significantly higher than that of non abutment teeth (7.79%).
Conclusion:
The effect on abutment teeth of removable partial denture in aged patients were complex and it can increase the rate of dental caries , fracture and missing of abutment teeth.
