Area of Science:

  • Cardiovascular Surgery
  • Thoracic Surgery
  • Cardiac Valve Surgery

Background:

  • The Ross procedure is a viable alternative for aortic valve replacement in select patients.
  • This study presents medium-term outcomes of the Ross procedure.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the medium-term results of the Ross procedure for aortic valve replacement.
  • To assess the safety and efficacy of aortic root replacement with a pulmonary autograft in adult patients.

Main Methods:

  • Twenty-one patients underwent the Ross operation between 1998 and 2004.
  • Indications included aortic stenosis, regurgitation, or endocarditis.
  • Aortic root replacement was performed in 81% of patients.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Hospital mortality was 4.7%, with zero late mortality.
  • All patients were in New York Heart Association class I at a mean follow-up of 4 years.
  • One patient required reintervention for neo-aortic root dilatation; pulmonary autograft function was generally good with minimal gradients.

Conclusions:

  • The Ross procedure, particularly with aortic root replacement, is safe and effective in adult patients.
  • Pulmonary homograft degeneration requiring reintervention appears to be a rare complication.
