Summary

Warfarin patients hospitalized for head trauma face significant risks, with intracerebral bleeding common and a high mortality rate. Close observation and prompt CT scans are crucial for managing these patients.

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Trauma Surgery
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Warfarin is a common anticoagulant medication.
  • Head trauma in patients on warfarin presents unique management challenges.
  • Understanding the clinical course and outcomes is vital for patient care.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the clinical course and outcomes of patients on warfarin who were hospitalized due to head trauma.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective study of 13 warfarinized patients with head trauma at Royal Perth Hospital (1994-2000).
  • Data collected included patient demographics, injury details, warfarin status, and outcomes.
  • Computed tomography (CT) scans were utilized for diagnosis.

Main Results:

  • Intracerebral bleeding was the most frequent injury (9/13 patients).
  • Confusion was the most common presenting symptom (4/13 patients).
  • Mortality rate was high at 38.5% (5/13 patients).

Conclusions:

  • Warfarinized patients with head trauma require hospitalization for close neurological monitoring.
  • A low threshold for performing computed tomography (CT) scans is recommended for early diagnosis and management.
