Summary

Long-term propranolol use may worsen mitochondrial disorders, causing symptoms like muscle pain and weakness. Stopping the drug can lead to gradual symptom improvement and increased muscle mass in patients with mitochondrial myopathies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the potential influence of long-term propranolol administration on a patient with a probable mitochondrial disorder.

  • A case study of a 52-year-old woman diagnosed with a probable mitochondrial disorder.
  • Clinical examination, lactate stress testing, electromyography, and muscle biopsy were performed.
  • The patient's response to propranolol discontinuation was monitored.

Main Results:

  • The patient presented with ptosis, dysarthria, myalgias, muscle stiffness, and weakness, consistent with a mitochondrial disorder.
  • Lactate stress testing and muscle biopsy indicated mitochondrial dysfunction.

Conclusions:
