Summary

This study found no increased fecal carriage of Streptococcus bovis in children with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The Streptococcus bovis carrier rate in pediatric IBD patients was similar to that of healthy controls.

Background:

  • Fecal carriage of Streptococcus bovis has been linked to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in adults.
  • The prevalence of S. bovis in pediatric IBD patients remains understudied.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the fecal carriage rate of Streptococcus bovis in children diagnosed with IBD.
  • To compare the S. bovis carriage rate in pediatric IBD patients with that of a control group of healthy children.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective enrollment of 47 pediatric patients with IBD and 34 healthy controls.
  • Stool samples were collected and analyzed within 24 hours for the presence of S. bovis.
  • Fisher's exact test was used for statistical comparison of carriage rates.

  • The S. bovis fecal carriage rate was 6% in IBD patients (8.5% including an equivocal result).
  • The S. bovis fecal carriage rate was 9% in the control group.

  • The fecal carriage rate of Streptococcus bovis is not elevated in pediatric patients with inflammatory bowel disease compared to healthy children.
