  • Organic Chemistry

Background:

  • The genus Physalis is known for its diverse phytochemical constituents with various biological activities.
  • Exploring the chemical diversity of medicinal plants is crucial for discovering novel therapeutic agents.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To isolate and characterize new chemical compounds from the aerial parts of Physalis coztomatl.
  • To investigate the diterpenoid and steroidal alkaloid content of this plant species.

Main Methods:

  • Extraction and isolation of compounds using chromatographic techniques.
  • Structure elucidation through comprehensive spectroscopic analyses (NMR, MS).
  • Confirmation of structures via chemical transformations and X-ray diffraction analysis.

Main Results:

  • Isolation of a new labdane diterpene, physacoztomatin (1).
  • Identification of five new withanolides, designated physacoztolides A-E (5-9).
  • Characterization of six known compounds, with labd-13(E)-ene-8alpha,15-diol (4) and physacoztomatin (1) being the first labdane diterpenes reported in the Physalis genus.

Conclusions:

  • The study expands the known chemical profile of Physalis coztomatl.
  • The discovery of novel labdane diterpenes and withanolides contributes to the understanding of Physalis phytochemistry.
  • These findings may provide a basis for further investigation into the biological activities of these compounds.
