Summary

This study reports a rare case of spinal intradural capillary hemangioma in the lumbar spine. Surgical removal of this vascular tumor led to improved patient symptoms.

Background:

  • Capillary hemangiomas are usually superficial lesions affecting the skin or mucosa of the head and neck.
  • Intradural capillary hemangiomas, particularly in the spinal region, are exceptionally rare occurrences.

Observation:

  • A 59-year-old male presented with a 3-month history of low back and left leg pain, accompanied by paresthesia and diminished knee jerk.
  • Magnetic resonance imaging identified a 2-cm intradural enhancing lesion at the L1-2 disc space.
  • Surgical exploration revealed a reddish mass encasing nerve roots, supplied by radicular vessels.

Findings:

  • Complete surgical excision of the intradural capillary hemangioma was achieved via L1-2 laminectomy.
  • Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of capillary hemangioma.
  • Postoperative recovery showed significant improvement in the patient's neurological symptoms.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the importance of considering rare vascular tumors in the differential diagnosis of spinal lesions.
  • Successful surgical management of spinal intradural capillary hemangiomas can lead to favorable patient outcomes.
  • Further research into the pathogenesis and optimal treatment strategies for these rare tumors is warranted.
