Summary

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO) significantly improved healing in patients with severe vasculitis-induced ulcers. This safe and effective treatment showed an 80% complete healing rate with no reported side-effects.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the efficacy of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy for nonhealing skin ulcers caused by vasculitis.
  • To evaluate the impact of HBO on tissue oxygenation in vasculitic ulcers.
  • To determine the safety profile of HBO in this patient population.

Main Methods:

  • 35 adult patients with severe, nonhealing vasculitis-induced ulcers were enrolled.

  • Baseline ulcer tissue oxygenation was measured at various oxygen pressures (room air, 1 ATA, 2 ATA).
  • Patients received a 4-week treatment of 100% oxygen at 2 ATA, five times weekly.

    • 80% of patients achieved complete ulcer healing after 4 weeks of HBO.
    • No adverse side-effects related to HBO therapy were observed in any patient.

    Conclusions:

    • Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a safe and effective treatment option for vasculitis patients with nonhealing skin ulcers.
    • Further research is warranted to explore HBO's role as a primary therapy for these ulcers.
    • HBO therapy demonstrates significant potential in managing refractory vasculitic ulcers.
