Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Pharmacology
  • Clinical Trials

Background:

  • Aripiprazole is an atypical antipsychotic.
  • It is recognized for its efficacy in treating schizophrenia.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically review randomized controlled trials (RCTs).
  • To evaluate the effects of aripiprazole in patients with schizophrenia and schizophrenia-like psychoses.

Main Methods:

  • Conducted comprehensive literature searches (database, manual, direct contact).
  • Included 10 randomized controlled studies with 4125 participants.
  • Noted large study attrition and poor data reporting standards.

Main Results:

  • Aripiprazole significantly decreased relapse rates and improved compliance compared to placebo.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Aripiprazole led to lower prolactin levels than placebo.
  • Compared to risperidone, aripiprazole showed less prolactin elevation and QTc interval prolongation.
  • Conclusions:

    • Aripiprazole is licensed despite limited publicly available reliable data.
    • The drug may be effective for schizophrenia treatment.
    • It demonstrates minimal differences in tolerability and global outcomes compared to existing antipsychotics.
