Most community-based schizophrenia patients experience memory impairment, as shown by the Rivermead Behavioural Memory Test (RBMT). This study highlights the prevalence of cognitive deficits in schizophrenia outside clinical settings.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Psychiatry
  • Cognitive Psychology

Background:

  • Schizophrenia is often associated with memory deficits.
  • Previous studies relied on laboratory tests, limiting real-world applicability.
  • Community-based assessments are needed to understand the true scope of memory impairment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess memory impairment in community-dwelling schizophrenia patients.
  • To utilize a clinically relevant memory test for ecological validity.
  • To determine the prevalence of memory deficits in this population.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 73 schizophrenia patients from a defined catchment area participated.
  • The Rivermead Behavioural Memory Test (RBMT) was administered.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Patient performance was compared to 71 matched controls.
  • Main Results:

    • Schizophrenia patients performed significantly worse on the RBMT compared to controls (P<0.001).
    • A high percentage of patients (81%) exhibited memory impairment based on RBMT scores.
    • Memory impairment was observed in 28% of the control group.

    Conclusions:

    • The majority of community-based schizophrenia patients demonstrate memory impairment.
    • Clinically relevant testing reveals a high prevalence of cognitive deficits.
    • Findings underscore the need for targeted memory interventions in schizophrenia care.
