Spontaneous coeliac artery dissection is a rare condition presenting as abdominal pain. Conservative management was successful, with follow-up showing splenic artery changes and infarct.

Area of Science:

  • Vascular Surgery
  • Diagnostic Imaging
  • Gastroenterology

Background:

  • Spontaneous arterial dissection is uncommon.
  • Isolated visceral artery dissection, particularly of the coeliac artery, is extremely rare.

Observation:

  • A case of spontaneous coeliac artery dissection presenting with upper abdominal pain is described.
  • Diagnosis was confirmed using contrast-enhanced multislice helical computed tomography (CT).

Findings:

  • The patient was managed conservatively.
  • Follow-up CT revealed mild aneurysmal change in the splenic artery and a small splenic infarct.

Implications:

  • Limited evidence complicates management decisions for isolated visceral artery dissections.
