Area of Science:

  • Health Economics
  • Behavioral Economics
  • Risk Management

Background:

  • Empirical studies indicate a positive correlation between fear of sickness (FS) and preventative health behaviors.
  • FS is conceptualized as the anticipated loss of future utility due to illness.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To theoretically examine the determinants of optimal prevention strategies for health risks.
  • To identify conditions under which individuals with higher FS undertake greater prevention efforts.

Main Methods:

  • Theoretical modeling of health risk prevention decisions.
  • Analysis of the role of prudence (Kimball, 1990) in optimal prevention.

Main Results:

  • A positive relationship exists between fear of sickness and prevention effort.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Lower prudence is identified as a sufficient condition for increased prevention among individuals with higher FS, independent of risk distribution.
  • Conclusions:

    • Prudence is a significant determinant of optimal health risk prevention.
    • Understanding the interplay between fear of sickness and prudence can inform public health interventions and risk management strategies.
