Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Surgical Nutrition
  • Gastroenterology

Background:

  • Cancer patients experience metabolic changes and nutritional deficits.
  • Nutritional status significantly impacts surgical outcomes in cancer care.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of various nutritional regimens on surgical outcomes in cancer patients.
  • To compare parenteral, enteral, and immunonutrition strategies.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic literature review focusing on gastrointestinal cancer patients undergoing major surgery.
  • Analysis of studies on parenteral nutrition, enteral nutrition, and immunonutrition.
  • Outcome measures included postoperative complication rates and hospital stay duration.

Main Results:

  • Postoperative enteral nutrition significantly decreased complications versus parenteral feeding in malnourished patients.
  • Preoperative and perioperative enteral formulas with arginine and omega-3 fatty acids improved surgical outcomes.
  • These benefits were observed in both well-nourished and malnourished patient groups.

Conclusions:

  • Enteral immunonutrition is recommended as the primary nutritional approach for surgical patients.
  • Optimized enteral nutrition strategies enhance recovery and reduce morbidity post-surgery.
