Surgery for tumour recurrence in a pneumonectomy space

Background:

• Reoperative surgery in a prior pneumonectomy space is typically for managing complications like empyemas and bronchopleural fistulae.
• Elective tracheal resections have also been reported in this surgical space.

Observation:

• Two cases of recurrent tumors, a leiomyosarcoma and a carcinoid tumor, were analyzed.
• These tumors recurred 2 and 13 years after initial surgical resection, respectively.

Findings:

• Successful excision of both recurrent tumors was achieved through the previous pneumonectomy space.
• This demonstrates the feasibility of utilizing this space for complex oncologic resections.

Implications:

• The pneumonectomy space can be a viable surgical corridor for managing late recurrences of thoracic tumors.
• This approach may offer an alternative to more extensive reoperations in select cases.
