Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Hematology
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Scleromyxedema is a rare, chronic skin disease characterized by papules and associated with plasma cell dyscrasias.
  • Current treatments for scleromyxedema have limited efficacy and significant adverse effects.

Observation:

  • A patient presented with a severe case of scleromyxedema.

Findings:

  • The patient experienced marked clinical improvement after treatment with thalidomide.

Implications:

  • Thalidomide demonstrates potential as an effective treatment for severe scleromyxedema.
  • Further research is warranted to evaluate the long-term safety and efficacy of thalidomide for scleromyxedema.
