[Epidemiological study of coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular diseases and their risk-factors]
Insights
This study investigated cardiovascular disease incidence and risk factors in Tbilisi. Arterial hypertension and smoking were more common in men, while overweight and hypercholesterolemia were more prevalent in women.
Area of Science:
- Cardiology
- Epidemiology
- Public Health
Context:
- Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and coronary heart disease (CHD) pose significant global health challenges.
- Understanding the incidence and risk factors of these conditions within specific populations is crucial for targeted interventions.
- This study examines the prevalence of CHD, CVD, combined pathologies, and associated risk factors in a representative sample from the Vake district of Tbilisi.
Purpose:
- To determine the incidence of coronary heart disease (CHD), cerebrovascular diseases (CVD), and combined pathologies (CHD and CVD).
- To identify the prevalence of key risk factors including arterial hypertension (AH), overweight (OW), hypercholesterolemia (HC), and tobacco smoking.
- To analyze the association between these risk factors and the occurrence of cardiovascular diseases in men and women.
Summary:
- The study found significant cardiovascular disease prevalence, with nearly a quarter of men and half of women affected.
- Arterial hypertension and tobacco smoking were more prevalent in men, whereas overweight and hypercholesterolemia were more common in women.
- Arterial hypertension was more frequent in individuals with combined pathology. Overweight was linked to CVD and combined pathology in women, while hypercholesterolemia was associated with CHD and CVD in men.
Impact:
- Provides essential epidemiological data on cardiovascular disease burden and risk factor distribution in the Vake district of Tbilisi.
- Highlights gender-specific differences in cardiovascular disease prevalence and risk factor profiles.
- Informs public health strategies and clinical practice for the prevention and management of cardiovascular diseases in the studied population.
Abstract:
To study the incidence of coronary heart disease (CHD), cerebrovascular diseases (CVD), combined pathology (CHD and CVD) and their risk factors such as arterial hypertension (AH), overweight (OW), hypercholesterolemia (HC) and tobacco smoking in the same population, a random representative sample of male and female populations were examined in Vake districts of Tbilisi. AH and tobacco smoking were found predominant among men, whereas OW and HC among women. It turned out that almost every fourth person out of the men and almost every second women suffered from cardiovascular diseases. In men, the CHD\CVD ratio was 1:1, that in the women, was 1:7. In the men and women, suffering from combined pathology, AH occurred more frequently as compared to those with CHD or CVD alone. OW promoted the development of CVD and combined pathology in women to a greater degree, whereas HC favoured the development of CHD and CV D in men.
