In elderly patients, a slower distraction rate of 0.5 mm/day for vertical bone augmentation in the mandible promotes faster bone healing. A minimum of 10 weeks of fixation is needed for gap closure.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of distraction rate and neutrofixation duration on bone formation and gap closure in the human mandible.

  • Vertical distraction osteogenesis was performed on 16 edentulous patients (mean age 62 years) with atrophic mandibles.

    • A distraction rate of 0.5 mm/day enhances osteogenesis in the mandibular distraction gap in elderly patients compared to 1 mm/day.
    • At least 10 weeks of neutrofixation is recommended for achieving complete closure of a 10 mm distraction gap.
