Purpose of the Study:

  • To differentiate between vascular and lymphatic capillaries in primary cutaneous melanoma.
  • To determine the role of lymphatic capillaries in melanoma metastasis.
  • To investigate the association between lymphatic presence and melanoma characteristics.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized a double staining technique with UEA1 and anti-type IV collagen antibody.
  • Examined 21 primary cutaneous melanoma samples.
  • Assessed tumor thickness, invasion level, growth phase, necrosis, regression, and mitotic index.

Main Results:

  • Seven of 21 melanomas contained lymphatic capillaries, appearing sparse and residual.
  • No instances of lymphatic permeation by melanoma were observed.
  • No significant association was found between lymphatic presence and tumor characteristics or melanoma spread.

Conclusions:

  • Scanty lymphatic capillaries are present in some primary cutaneous melanomas.
  • Lymphatic permeation does not appear to be a major factor in melanoma spread to locoregional lymph nodes.
  • Further research may be needed to fully elucidate the role of lymphatics in melanoma metastasis.
