Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Biomaterials Science
  • Reconstructive Surgery

Background:

  • Severe bone stock loss in the elbow presents significant reconstructive challenges.
  • Traditional methods like revision prostheses and osteoarticular allografts have notable drawbacks.
  • Total allograft-prosthesis composite arthroplasty is an emerging alternative for complex elbow reconstruction.

Observation:

  • A rare case of posttraumatic floating elbow with extensive bone and joint loss was treated.
  • The treatment utilized a total allograft-prosthesis composite arthroplasty technique.
  • The patient presented with significant bone and joint deficit requiring advanced reconstructive methods.

Findings:

  • Excellent clinical outcomes were achieved at 75 months post-surgery, with a Mayo Clinic performance score of 100/100.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Complete fusion between the allograft and native bone was observed.
  • No complications, including graft loosening or epiphyseal lysis, were reported during the follow-up period.
  • Implications:

    • This composite technique effectively addresses major bone and joint loss in the elbow.
    • It combines the benefits of allograft bone reconstruction with prosthetic stability.
    • The method mitigates the risks associated with isolated allograft or prosthetic interventions, offering a promising solution for complex elbow trauma.
