Summary

This study quantitatively assessed psychosexual development using object relations maturity. Findings suggest the McGill Object Relations Scale (MORS) can objectify fixation-regression phenomena, particularly at the anal stage.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Psychiatry
  • Psychoanalysis

Background:

  • Psychosexual development is traditionally assessed qualitatively.
  • A quantitative approach using object relations maturity was proposed.
  • The McGill Object Relations Scale (MORS) quantifies object-relation maturity across developmental stages.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine how fixation-regression manifests in object relation profiles.
  • To investigate fixation-regression in individuals with probable anal stage regression.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized an unfolding model to analyze data from 60 criminal subjects.
  • Subjects diagnosed with borderline personality disorder and perversion or psychopathy.
  • McGill Object Relations Scale (MORS) scores were assessed by two independent judges.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Object relation stages (oral-narcissistic, oral-objectal, phallic, oedipal, genital) showed synchrony, supporting a psychosexual development continuum.
  • The anal stage's observed scores did not fit the unfolding model.
  • High inter-judge reliability (0.93) for the anal stage suggests the discrepancy is not due to scoring error.

Conclusions:

  • MORS is a promising tool for quantifying object relations and objectifying fixation-regression.
  • The anal stage's unique pattern in MORS profiles warrants further investigation.
  • Replication with diverse samples and further research are needed to generalize findings.
