Summary

The pancreas, traditionally thought immobile, moves with respiration. This study shows the pancreas moves downward and the head moves medially during inspiration, confirmed by fluoroscopy in chronic pancreatitis patients.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess pancreatic movement during respiration.
  • To utilize fluoroscopy, a simple and inexpensive imaging method.
  • To challenge the traditional concept of pancreatic immobility.

  • Studied 22 patients with chronic pancreatitis.
  • Patients had pancreatic calcification or an indwelling pancreatic duct stent.
  • Movement was measured via fluoroscopy, tracking stent/calcification displacement relative to the spine during breathing.
