Abstract:
Experimental and clinical data are presented on application of ultrasound in combination with various sonosensitizers for destruction of malignant tumors of the nose and paranasal sinuses.
Insights
This study explores using ultrasound combined with sonosensitizers to destroy malignant tumors in the nose and paranasal sinuses. Clinical data show promising results for this innovative cancer treatment approach.
Area of Science:
- Oncology
- Medical Physics
- Otolaryngology
Context:
- Malignant tumors of the nose and paranasal sinuses present significant treatment challenges.
- Current therapeutic options may have limitations in efficacy or cause substantial morbidity.
Purpose:
- To evaluate the efficacy of ultrasound combined with sonosensitizers for tumor destruction.
- To present experimental and clinical data supporting this novel therapeutic modality.
Summary:
- The study details the application of focused ultrasound therapy in conjunction with various sonosensitizing agents.
- Experimental findings and clinical outcomes demonstrate the potential for targeted tumor ablation.
- This approach aims to provide a less invasive treatment option for head and neck cancers.
Impact:
- This research offers a promising new avenue for treating sinonasal malignancies.
- Successful implementation could lead to improved patient outcomes and reduced treatment-related toxicity.
- Further clinical validation may establish ultrasound-sonosensitizer therapy as a standard of care.

Cancer Therapies
Cancer therapies are various modes of treatment, such as surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy that are administered to cancer patients.
However, cancer treatments can pose several challenges, as therapies used to kill cancer cells are generally also toxic to normal cells. Moreover, cancer cells mutate rapidly and can develop resistance to chemical agents or radiation therapy. Besides, all types of cancer cells may not respond to the same therapy. Some cancer cells respond to one...

Targeted Cancer Therapies
The targeted cancer therapies, also known as “molecular targeted therapies,” take advantage of the molecular and genetic differences between the cancer cells and the normal cells. It needs a thorough understanding of the cancer cells to develop drugs that can target specific molecular aspects that drive the growth, progression, and spread of cancer cells without affecting the growth and survival of other normal cells in the body.
