Summary

Tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (T-helper cells) and monocytes are found in renal cell carcinoma (RCC), increasing with tumor stage and grade. HLA-DR expression on tumor cells also correlates with higher stage and grade.

Background:

  • Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is a complex malignancy.
  • Understanding tumor immunophenotype may reveal correlations with disease progression and treatment outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate immunophenotypic markers in RCC.
  • To correlate marker expression with tumor biologic behavior, stage, grade, and patient outcomes.

Main Methods:

  • Immunoperoxidase staining was performed on 14 RCCs using antibodies for T-cell, B-cell, monocyte, and tumor cell markers.
  • Markers included Leu 4, Leu 14, Leu 2a, Leu 3a/b, lysozyme, DRC, S-100, HLA-DR, EMA, and B2-MG.
  • Staining results were correlated with tumor stage, grade, histology, cellular infiltrate, and clinical follow-up.
