Summary

A patient experienced a visual phenomenon resembling a cross after cataract surgery. This was likely caused by folds in the posterior lens capsule.

Background:

  • Cataract surgery with intraocular lens (IOL) implantation is a common procedure.
  • Visual disturbances can occur postoperatively, necessitating investigation.

Observation:

  • A 68-year-old female patient reported a persistent binocular cross phenomenon.
  • This visual artifact was particularly noticeable with nocturnal light sources, such as streetlights.

Findings:

  • The observed cross-shaped visual disturbance mimicked the effect of Bagolini striated glasses.
  • Posterior capsular folds were identified as the probable cause of the visual phenomenon.

Implications:

  • Posterior capsular folds can induce unique visual artifacts post-cataract surgery.
