Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Surgical Pathology
  • Developmental Biology

Background:

  • Peritoneal encapsulation (PE), also known as abdominal cocoon, is a rare condition characterized by a sac-like encapsulation of the small intestine.
  • It is thought to result from an abnormal return of the midgut loop to the abdominal cavity during embryonic development.

Observation:

  • A 38-year-old male presented with recurrent episodes of intestinal obstruction.
  • Computed tomography (CT) revealed features suggestive of PE syndrome.

Findings:

  • Surgical exploration (laparotomy) confirmed PE, with the small intestine encased in a peritoneal sac.
  • Adhesions within the sac were lysed, and the encapsulation was surgically released.

Implications:

Related Experiment Videos

  • PE is a rare congenital anomaly requiring high clinical suspicion for diagnosis.
  • While CT can suggest PE, definitive diagnosis often necessitates laparotomy.
  • Surgical intervention can lead to successful outcomes in managing PE-related intestinal obstruction.
