Summary

Infectious gastroenteritis (IGE) significantly increases the risk of developing irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). This meta-analysis found a sevenfold higher odds of IBS after IGE, highlighting the importance of preventing infections to reduce long-term IBS incidence.

  • Prevalence rates of postinfectious IBS (PI-IBS) vary widely.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To explore variations in reported PI-IBS rates.
  • To provide a pooled risk estimate for PI-IBS.
  • To analyze factors influencing PI-IBS risk.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic literature search of multiple electronic databases.
  • Data abstraction by two independent investigators.
  • Assessment of study quality, heterogeneity, and publication bias; sensitivity analysis performed.

  • Eight studies were included, all showing increased IBS risk post-IGE.
