Summary

Disgust is an evolved defense mechanism that prevents infection before pathogen contact. This study proposes serotonin (5-HT) as a potential mediator linking disgust, vomiting, and immune responses in a protective continuum.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Immunology
  • Evolutionary Biology

Background:

  • Organismal integrity relies on immune systems recognizing and attacking foreign threats.
  • Immune responses necessitate direct contact with pathogens, leaving a window for infection.
  • Disgust is hypothesized as an evolved neural response to environmental disease cues, promoting avoidance behavior.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To propose disgust, emesis, and immunity as a defensive continuum.
  • To investigate the role of serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) as a potential mediator between disgust and immunity.

Main Methods:

  • Conceptual framework development based on existing biological and psychological principles.
  • Literature review and synthesis of evidence regarding disgust, emesis, immunity, and serotonin pathways.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Disgust acts as a pre-contact defense, preventing pathogen entry.
  • Emesis (vomiting) serves as a post-ingestion, pre-penetration defense mechanism.
  • Immunity addresses pathogens after body boundary penetration.

Conclusions:

  • Disgust, emesis, and immunity form a continuum of defense against infectious agents.
  • Serotonin (5-HT) is proposed as a key mediator, linking the neural and immune aspects of these defense mechanisms.
